| SWATH was designed to allow one to generate maps of the magnetic field of an arbitrary collection of magnetic objects arrayed in space in fixed positions. This algorithm has application wherever it is necessary to check speculation as to a magnetic field source against the facts. SWATH allows one to deploy an arbitrary number of magnetic field sources at chosen points in space and then map the collective field generated by these sources.
Specifically, SWATH prompts the user to enter the description and position of several magnetic field sources. The descriptions include point dipoles, current loops, infinite straight line currents, and various sorts of current tubes and sheets. The number of sources entered has no bound other than hardware limitations. After the list of field sources has been entered the algorithm asks for the particular swath of the resulting magnetic field one wants to look at. The swath is two dimensional and planar. Besides these two restrictions the swath's parameters can be determined by the user. Dependent on one's choice, SWATH maps either the total magnetic field magnitude or one particular component of the magnetic field. Precise values of the generated magnetic field are calculated via infinite series methods at any point in space around the several sources. Applications of SWATH include academic investigation of magnetic field structures where it is desirable to see the field of a complicated source. In geological applications, SWATH can be used to check any theory concerning the origins of a given geomagnetic field anomaly. In engineering situations where it is necessary to design a magnetic field with certain specifications, SWATH can be used to close in on the appropriate source design. The final design can also be checked using SWATH. SWATH provides a highly flexible tool for exploring complex magnetic fields.
